What Are the Uses for Blue Star Ointment?

Blue Star Ointment may be used to treat itchy, dry, irritated skin caused by eczema, bug bites and fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot, ringworm and jock itch. This ointment also helps treat dry, cracked skin caused by cold weather, allergic reactions to detergents and dyes, and frequent hand washing.

The main ingredient in Blue Star Ointment is camphor. This oil, derived from the wood and bark of the camphor tree, increases blood flow to nerve endings to help reduce swelling, burning and itching on various areas of the skin. Camphor also helps stop fungi from growing so that the infected areas can heal faster.

Blue Star Ointment contains inactive ingredients, such as menthol, salicylic acid, mineral oil, aloe oil extract, petrolatum and benzoic acid, that aid in soothing irritated skin. This product does not contain steroids or hydrocortisone and is safe for both children and adults when used as directed.

Created by pharmacist Adolf Gottlieb in the 1920s, the company selling Blue Star Ointment was eventually sold to businessman Robert Whitehead, who had previously used the ointment to treat his psoriasis. Impressed with the results, Whitehead decided to sell the ointment nationally. Blue Star Ointment is still manufactured and sold by the Whitehead family.
