How Do You Use a Volleyball Lineup Sheet?
In volleyball, the use of a lineup sheet is necessary so that the game referee and goalkeeper know both the serving and rotation order of the players for a given game. The coach fills this sheet out prior to a game showing the serving order from one through six and the jersey number for each of the players associated with these positions on the court. It also shows which players are the libero and the team captain.
In volleyball, there are six players on each team in a game, including three in the front row and three in the back row. A libero is a player who specializes in defensive tactics and can substitute for a player in the back row. During a volleyball game, these six players rotate through six different positions.
Each team coach needs to fill out the lineup sheet, which can have the spots numbered as I, II, III, IV, V and VI to show player positions on the court. This sheet is useful to keep track of players after each rotation in positions.
For example, the I spot represents the first server and the subsequent numbers indicate the continuing serving order for the rest of the team members. If a team is serving first, the player in spot I serves first from the right back position.
Alternatively, a team that is receiving the first serve, has the first server (I) in the right side of the front row. Each time the receiving team wins sides out, the team members need to rotate in a clockwise direction, so that there is a new first server (I). The subsequent rotation occurs when the opposing team has the ball and then loses points.
