Star fruit grows on small evergreen trees, and it thrives under hot tropical conditions. The flowers of the star fruit tree grows in clusters and develop into oblong fruits with five-angled edges. The cross-sections of the star fruit resembles a starfish or sea star.

Star fruit flesh is light-green to yellow with crisp juicy pulp. Star fruit is low in calories and high in fiber, vitamin C and antioxidant flavonoids.

People with kidney disease should not eat star fruit. It contains an amino acid that acts as a neurotoxin in people with this condition.
