McDonald’s is the dominant buyer of potatoes in the United States, and the company purchases about 3.4 billion pounds of potatoes in America each year. Twice a year, the company conducts a French Fry Evaluation. The French Fry Evaluation is a contest for the best potatoes between the company’s three major potato suppliers in the United States: McCain, Lamb Weston and J.R. Simplot. McDonald’s attributes their huge international sales to this contest and other quality control efforts.
