How Many Car Makes Start With the Letter D?
There are at least 79 car makes, past and present, that start with the letter D. The bulk of these makes are foreign, but there are still a number of them — both domestic and foreign — that are still in production and are relatively well-known.
The Old-Timers
One of the first automobiles to be produced that started with a D was the Delamare- Debuutteville (1884). A more well-known make, the Daimler, came into existence in 1889. The first American “D” car was built by the Duryea Motor Company in 1893. Slightly later, the French Do Dion-Bouton was produced, which eventually became the Renault.
Dodge and De Soto
In 1914, a “D” automobile came into production that is still popular today: the Dodge. It was followed a few years later by the De Soto, which has since stopped production. In the Roaring Twenties, the Duesenberg was a favorite for those who could afford one.
De Lorean and Datsun
The 1950s and 60s saw the introduction of the De Lorean of “Back to the Future” fame, while the ultra-practical Datsun from Japan made its debut. The Datsun name has since been changed to Nissan but there are rumors the brand could stage a return.
