What Are Some Examples of Pop Culture?

Pop culture, or popular culture, is the collection of ideas, opinions, and images popular within a culture at a given time. It is constantly changing with each year. Today, the tv series Stranger Things, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the election, and the Broadway hit Hamilton are just some of the things that permeated our culture and had everyone talking.

Other examples of pop culture today include Beyoncé’s Lemonade, the final season of Downton Abbey, and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt breaking up.

Popular culture is defined as commonly known information that briefly holds the public interest. It is typically discussed in various mass media, including TV and the Internet, and becomes a topic of everyday conversation. Companies often exploit pop culture to promote their brands. Old Spice cologne commercials featured a character known as “Old Spice Guy,” who attained pop culture status as an Internet sensation.

Pop culture is sometimes thought of as a superficial distraction from important social issues. It is often criticized by religious groups, academics and those who oppose the influence of consumerism on society.
