Michael Jordan chose the number 23 as his jersey number in high school because it was half of the number 45, which was worn by his older brother Larry. The number 45 was the favorite of both Jordan brothers, but the elder brother had seniority and chose it before Michael could make his choice.

Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on February 17, 1963. He played basketball for Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, N.C., becoming an All-American. Jordan went on to play for the University of North Carolina and, in 1984, was drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association. In 1996, he was listed as one of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He is a six-time NBA champion, five-time NBA MVP and two-time Olympic gold medalist.
