What Did Little Red Riding Hood Have in Her Basket?

There are several different versions of the popular Little Red Riding Hood story from all across the world, and what the girl takes to her grandmother varies from cake and wine to soup depending on the story. None of the original Little Red Riding Hood tales actually mention a basket at all, but the basket does appear in later takes on the story, including Charles Marelles’ “The True History of Little Golden-Hood.”

Charles Perrault has Little Red Riding Hood bringing her grandmother a cake and a pot of butter. In the Brothers Grimm version — titled “Little Red Cap” — the girl brings her grandmother cake and a bottle of wine.
