Christians celebrate Christmas to rejoice over the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the son of God. Others celebrate Christmas as a season of love, family and joy as well as a day of giving and receiving gifts.

Although the Bible does not state the date on which Jesus was born, it is celebrated on December 25. This coincides with a pre-Christian mid-winter festivals where it was customary to decorate trees with lights and exchange small gifts. As of 2014, some important and widely practiced customs of Christmas still include decorating trees with lights and the exchange of gifts between loved ones.
