What Is a Browser, and What Are Three Examples?

A browser is a computer software application that allows people to browse websites on the Internet. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera and Firefox are examples of widely used browsers. Most browsers are free, and they often come pre-installed on computers.

The first browser was developed in 1990 when Sir Tim Burners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. This browser was called Nexus. As of 2014, Google Chrome is the number one browser developed by Google Inc. Internet Explorer was developed by Microsoft. Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Computers.

Web pages are displayed in a browser using a unique web address for each page. This address is called the URL or Uniform Resource Locator.
