A parcel of land is a measured portion or area of land. A parcel is defined by Dictionary.com as “a distinct, continuous portion or tract of land” and “a part, portion or fragment.”
When tracts of land are divided, bought and sold among owners, they are divided into groups referred to as parcels. Parcels of land also can be referred to as tracts or lots of land. Parcels are frequently measured and sold in terms of acres — measurements equal to 4,840 square yards. There are 640 acres in 1 square mile of land.
The word “parcel” is derived from the Middle French word parcelle.
