When designing an indoor basketball court, the height of the ceiling must be at least 16 feet. With a regulation rim resting 10 feet above the floor, there must be adequate space for the ball to reach the basket without the ceiling interfering with play.

If the structure permits, it is best to aim for a peak ceiling height of 20 feet or more. Caged lighting must be placed where it is least vulnerable to disturbance, and it is best to add high windows for additional natural light to ensure the proper visibility needed for play. The higher the ceiling, the less interruptions and need for the shooter to alter shot attempts during practice or competition.
