How Many Snakes Are There in the World?

With more than 3,400 different species of snakes throughout the world, it is impossible to know exactly how many snakes there are in the world. Of that, about 600 of them are venomous.

Of the 3,400 different species of snakes found throughout the world, only 116 of them are found in the United States, 19 of which are venomous. Snakes are cold-blooded vertebrates that are found in virtually every environment and type of climate. Unlike humans, their sense of smell is contained in their tongue. It is a common misconception that all snakes multiply by laying eggs. About 30 percent of snake species give birth to live young.
