The gestation period for whitetail deer is approximately seven months, and birth usually occurs during May and June. Whitetail does tend to have one, two or three fawns, and those does that are reproducing for the first time tend to have only one fawn.
During the birthing season, there are usually more male fawns than female fawns born, and the males tend to be larger than the females. When whitetail fawns are born, they usually weigh between 5 and 7 pounds. Whitetail fawns have a reddish brown coat with white spots that serves to camouflage them on the forest floor.
