What Is the Sign for Dishwasher Safe?

Most dishwasher safe signs are either a plate, bowl, wine glass or cup with water droplets above or imposed on top of the image. The foodware and dishware industry does not have a standard regulated system of official symbols so there is no single official sign for dishwasher safe.

The dishwasher safe sign means that the dishware or foodware item can be safely washed in the dishwasher without causing damage to the item. Before purchasing dishware or foodware items, the buyer should first look for a dishwasher safe sign if they intend to use the item with their home dishwasher. Items that are not dishwasher safe will often crack in the dishwasher or encounter other forms of damage.

The automatic dishwasher works by using detergents to provide chemical energy that can remove food soil. To help keep dishes sparkling, many people use an automatic dishwasher as they are also great at removing the grime and dried-up food that can be difficult to remove by hand.

The American Cleaning Institute recommends that automatic dishwashers be used with dishwasher detergents that are not prone to creating suds. Suds are bad for automatic dishwashers because they cushion the mechanical cleaning action of the water and lead to an overflowing of suds from the machine. The Institute also recommends that homeowners choose a dishwater detergent that will soften the water effectively to help prevent insoluble deposits.
