Russia is in both Europe and Asia, spanning the continental divide marked by the Ural Mountains and covering about 17 million miles. Approximately three-quarters of Russia is in Asia, expanding east from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. European Russia is west of the Ural Mountains.

Russia lies between longitudes 19° E and 169° W and latitudes 41° and 82° N in the north, west and east latitudes of the Northern Hemispheres, crossing nine time zones. It borders Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China and North Korea. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic Sea.
