The Sheraton chain of hotels is owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Starwood, which acquired the Sheraton group in 1998, is a transnational leisure corporation with operations in 100 countries, across more than 1,000 properties or 315,000 individual rooms.
Sheraton was originally owned by Ernest Henderson and Robert Moore in 1937. Ten years after opening its first hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Sheraton Corporation of America became the first of its kind to appear on the New York Stock Exchange. As part of Starwood, the Sheraton group of hotels is also owned in part and directed by the company’s many investors and shareholders.
